DATES FOR YOUR DIARIES ON COMPLETION OF THE SEASON.

FRIDAY 18th June 2010.  -  PRESENTATION, BUFFET & SOCIAL EVENING AT CORUS SPORTS CLUB.

TUESDAY 22nd JUNE 2010  -  ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING, FOLLOWED BY LEAGUE FORMATION FOR SEASON 2010 / 2011

D.R. Ledgard Challenge Cup

On completion of the group stage, Corus “B” and last season’s winners Hawarden were eliminated.

The ensuing semi-finals both resulted in 9-1 scorelines. Caergwrle B.B. beat Corus “A”, the latter playing the fixture with only two players for whom John Chan chalked up the solitary opening win by beating Alan Taylor of the B.B. In the second fixture, league champions Corus overcame Caergwrle B.B.“A” with Ryan Taylor beating Richard Thom of Corus for their lone win.

The Final of this cup competition took place at Hawarden Institute on Friday 7th May, with Corus completing the league & cup doubles by beating Caergwrle B.B. 6-3 on the night, Andy Taylor winning all his singles for Corus.

The top 3 players over the group stage, semi-finals & final were Bernie Carter (Caergwrle B.B.) with 25 wins out of 27 played, followed by team-mate Alan Taylor with 25 out of 30, then Richard Thom (Corus) attaining 23 out of 26.

D.R.Ledgard Handicap Cup

Hawarden “C” were the unlucky team to be eliminated after the group stage.

The first semi-final between Buckley and Hawarden “B” ended in a 5-5 draw, with Geoff Warren winning all his 3 singles, but he & his son Scott lost their unbeaten doubles record in this competition going down in straight games to the Hawarden “B” pairing of Brian Burr & Jenny Blain. As per rules, a deciding doubles was required, resulting in Sylvia Dickson & Jenny Blain beating Geoff Warren & Nathan Garland to win the match 6-5 in favour of the Hawarden team, thus knocking out the holders of this trophy. The second semi-final also resulted in another close contest with Hawarden “A” running out winners against Corus “C” by 6-4, despite the heroic efforts of Charles Blackwood of the Shotton team in winning all his singles matches and combining with Gerry Hotchkiss to take the doubles in the 3rd game by 26-24 against the Hawarden pairing of Gary Williams & Cyril McCormick. Dave Kay, Paul Temple and Gary each won 2 sets for the Institute team.

The Final of this cup competition finally took place at Corus Sports Club on Tuesday 18th May, with Hawarden “B” running out winners by 6 games to 2, Gary Williams taking the sole 2 wins for the Hawarden “A” side. The winning team comprised Brian Burr, Jenny Blain and acting team captain Sylvia Dickson.

The top 3 players over the group stage, semi-finals & final were Geoff Warren (Buckley) with 25 wins out of 27 played, followed by Gary Williams (Hawarden “A”) 18 out of 20 ahead of Brian Burr (Hawarden”B”) who achieved 15 out of 17.

Ray Baker Memorial Trophy

In the semi-finals, Corus “B” accounted for Caergwrle BB “A” by some 50+ points, whilst Hawarden “B” overcame last seasons holders Hawarden “C” by 68 points.

Reluctantly, the Cup Competitions Committee have had to postpone the final until the start of next season in September, due to neither team being able to turn out a team of 3 players (absolutely essential for this trophy in view of team handicapping) on a number of the dates offered.

Peter Barclay Memorial Shield.

The preliminary round of this doubles competition finally got underway on 23rd April, with the holders Hawarden “C” losing out to their clubmates Hawarden “B” by 14-5, who then travelled to Corus “C” the following Tuesday beating them 14-10 to reach their third final of the season. In the final, they will again meet up with their Handicap cup opponents Hawarden “A” who recorded a 15-12 result at the expense of Buckley.

The Final of this Memorial Shield competition took place at Hawarden Institute on Friday 14th May, where Hawarden “B” again triumphed over their club colleagues Hawarden “A” with a resounding 14-6 win, both sides fielding the same players as in the Handicap Cup final.
